Station 1: Ghostly Pop Can

 

1. Read the Big Ideas:

 

​​

2. Set an empty aluminum pop can on its side on a flat table.

3. Hold the PVC pipe a few inches away from the pop can and see if you can make it move without touching it.

4. Rub the PVC pipe vigorously with the wool.

5. Hold the PVC pipe a few inches away from the pop can.

6. Slowly move the PVC pipe closer to the pop can (without touching the can) until it moves.

7. See if you can move the can along the “racetrack” without touching the can!

8. Answer the lab questions.

Station 2: Iron Filing Topagraphy

 

1. Read the Big Ideas:

2. Place the plastic sheet directly over the bar magnet.

3. Gently shake iron filings onto the plastic sheet.

4. Observe: The filings instantly shift, aligning into beautiful, distinct curved loops that perfectly trace out the physical boundary and geometry of the invisible magnetic field lines!

5. Remove the magnets.

6. Carefully pour the iron filings back into the container.

7. Answer the lab questions.

Station 3: Universal Simulator

1. Read the Big Ideas:

2. Test Gravity: Take the tennis ball and drop it at various angles. What does the ball do each time?

3. Test Electricity: Take the balloons and rub one side on the wool. Point the sides of the balloon you rubbed together towards each other.  What do the balloons do? 

4. Test Electricity: Take the balloons and rub one side on the wool. Point the sides of the balloon you did NOT rub together towards each other.  What do the balloons do?  

5. Test Magnetism: Take the magnets and point the 2 north ends towards each other.  What do the magnets do? 

6. Test Magnetism: Take the magnets and point 1 north end and 1 south end towards each other.  What do the magnets do? 

7. Answer the lab questions.

Station 4: Magnetic Bumper Cars

1. Read the Big Ideas:

2. Point the front of Car A (North) toward the back of Car B (South). Push Car A forward. It will magnetically latch onto Car B and pull it along (Attraction).

3. Turn Car B completely around so its North pole is now facing Car A's North pole. Try to push Car A into Car B.

4. Answer the lab questions.

Station 5: Battle Ship Magnets

1. Read the Big Ideas:

2. Split your group into 2 teams. Decide who will be Team A and Team B.

3. Each team gets a laminated grid.

4. Team A secretly places a magnet under their grid (the "ocean"). Tape it down so it cannot move.

5. Team B calls out a coordinate (like A4). 

6. Team A places the compass on that coordinate and Team B records the direction and pull intensity on their grid. (Remember: Opposites attract and Like Poles Repel)

7. Team B gets the opportunity to call and track 5 more coordinates. Then, they have to make a guess where the magnet is.

8. Switch the roles of Team A and Team B and repeat the process.

9. Answer the lab questions.

Station 6: Millimeter Snap Test

1. Read the Big Ideas:

 

​​

2. Place the paper clip at 0 cm.

3. Start the strong magnet at 15 cm and slowly slide it closer to the paperclip by millimeters. Record the exact millimeter mark where the paperclip suddenly breaks friction and snaps to the magnet. 

4. Repeat this with the weaker magnet to see how distance affects the magnetic force's reach.

5. Answer the lab questions.

Station 1: Balloon and Water

1. Read the Big Ideas:

 

2. Rub the balloon on the felt piece.

3. Run the water in the faucet (Not too strong!)

4. Bring the side that you rubbed on the felt towards the stream of water slowly.

5. Answer the lab questions.

Station 2: Levatating Tinsel

1. Read the Big Ideas:

 

2. Rub the PVC pipe with the wool cloth to give it a strong negative charge.

3. Do the same to the tinsel loop (or another balloon).

4. Drop the tinsel over the PVC pipe. 

5. Observe: The tinsel will expand into a sphere and "levitate" in the air above the pipe. 

6. Keep moving the pipe to keep the tinsel floating without touching it.

7. Answer the lab questions.

Station 3: Floating Rings

1. Read the Big Ideas:

 

​​​​

2. Try to stack the magnets on the dowel so that they all slam together (attraction). 

3. Then, flip every other magnet over. The magnets will now magically hover in mid-air, bouncing against each other without touching (repulsion). 

4. Answer the lab questions.

Station 4: Puppet Maze

1. Read the Big Ideas:

 

​​

2. Put the figurine at the starting line of the maze.

3. Place the magnet under the table with the side that causes attraction.

4. Use the magnet to take the figurine through the maze.

5. Repeat the process with all the magnets.

6. Flip the magnets over and see if you can make the figurine move with the side of the magnet that repels. 

7. Answer the lab questions.

Station 5: Magnetic Racing

1. Read the Big Ideas:

 

​​

2. The Attract Test: Place the car at the 0 cm mark on the ruler. Slowly bring the stick-magnet closer from the other end. Record the exact millimeter mark where the car suddenly snaps forward across the distance gap.

3. The Repel Test: Flip the stick-magnet over. Push the car from behind using the invisible magnetic "shield." Measure how close the stick can get before the car rolls away on its own.

4. Answer the lab questions.

Station 6: Magnetic Racing

1. Read the Big Ideas:

 

​​

2. Place 3 steel spheres on the “net side” of the magnet.

3. Place 2 steel spheres on the other side of the magnet in the middle of the track (not touching the magnet).

4. Roll 1 steel sphere down the ramp (opposite end from the net).

5. Answer the lab questions.

Q5P4: Reassess

From Your Folder/Binder: Get out your Forces and Motion Learning Target Page. 

 

Reassess only on targets FM.5 (Non Contact Forces),  SEP7 (Data Evidence), and SEP6 (Relationship Statements). 

 

Show Mrs. Roehm your completed self assessment tell her which target is your biggest strength and which is your biggest challenge (FM5, SEP7, or SEP6). Mrs. Roehm will give you a signature on your Assignment Tracker.
