Quest 2: Newton's 2nd Law
With Variables and Graphing
Q2P1: Marvelous Variables Practice
Google Classroom: Open the Q2P1: Marvelous Variables Practice Assignment. You may use this notes page to help you.
1. Remember, all variables (even the constants) must be formatted ______ of ________.
2. Don't forget to end your testable questions with a ? and are formatted "How does the __________ of _______ affect the ______________ of _______________?
3. For the independent variable, you ask yourself, "They did everything the same to each group except...."
4. For the dependent variable you ask yourself, "In the end, what did they measure? What data did they collect to know if their experiment worked?"

Q2P2: Marshmallow Shooter Lab
Google Classroom: Open the Q1P2: Marshmallow Shooter Lab Document.
Get a marshmallow shooter bucket from Mrs. Roehm. You will notice that the bucket has 1 big marshmallow and 6 small marshmallows. That is the number of Marshmallows that should be in the bucket when you give it back to Mrs. Roehm. Please pick up the marshmallows you launch so that they all get back into the bucket.
Clean up is very important in this lab. In the past, students have left marshmallows all over the ground and counters. That will create a sticky mess and draw ants to the room! You have to pick up all of your marshmallows! Even when you launch them across the room, you have to pick them up! If they roll under a student's table, just ask them politely to move so you can get it.
If you accidentally break one of the Marshmallow Shooters, let Mrs. Roehm know! Do not just leave it broken on the counter. Some of these will accidentally break, you won't be in trouble. Mrs. Roehm needs to know if any break so she can make more.
This video is a quick peak into what you will be doing. It is ok to watch the video to get a visual, but make sure you read all the directions so you make sure you are testing the correct variables and collecting the correct data.
***After you have gathered the required data...it is ok to do a multi-marshmallow launch just for fun! Just pick up all the marshmallows after you launch.

Q2P3: Ruler Flick Lab
Google Classroom: Open the Q1P3: Ruler Flick Lab Document.
Procedure 1: Testing Force
-
Have two members of the group sit on a hard surface about 6 - 10 feet apart.
-
Have one group member with the ruler and ping pong ball and another group member at the end of the 6 - 10 ft of "runway" to stop the ball so it doesn't fly across the room.
-
Put the ping pong ball on the “start” line on the ground. (Start line is just in front of the person with the ruler.)
-
Pull back the metal ruler a small distance and flick the ping-pong ball. Observe its acceleration and the distance it travels. (You may have to practice your “flick” technique!)
-
Then, pull the ruler back a larger distance to apply a larger force to the ping pong ball. Observe its acceleration and the distance it travels.
Procedure 2: Testing Mass
-
Pull the ruler back a large distance and flick the marble. If needed…practice your “flicking” technique! Observe its acceleration and the distance it travels.
-
Next, using the exact same large pullback distance, and flick the marble. Observe its acceleration and the distance it travels.
-
Next, using the exact same large pullback distance, and flick the golf ball. Observe its acceleration and the distance it travels.
-
Next, using the exact same large pullback distance, and flick the tennis ball. Observe its acceleration and the distance it travels.
***It is important that you pull the ruler back the same exact amount each time.
Make sure you have found all of the balls you flicked and put them back in the bucket.
Answer the lab questions. After answering the questions, you will get a Ruler Flick Graph Paper from Mrs. Roehm.
Once your questions and your graph are complete, check in with Mrs. Roehm for a signature.
