Q1P1: Self Assess

Get out your Forces and Motion Learning Target Page. For each target, self assess using Secure (S), Meeting (M), Progressing (P), and Learning (L). Remember, it is totally fine to assess at an L! Learning is a journey. It is about growth! This is just a starting point. We will reassess throughout the unit so we can track our growth in each Learning Target. 

S = I know all of the bullet points for the learning target without help.
M = I understand all of the bullet points for the learning target but I might make some mistakes here or there.
P = There is at least one bullet point for the learning target that I do not know or understand. 
L = I don't know any of the bullet points for the learning target.

Q1P2: Color Me Pink Lab

Google Classroom: Open the Q1P3: Color Me Pink Assignment in Google Classroom. Follow the directions in the assignment.

 

Check Points: Check in with Mrs. Roehm after:

  • Station 1

  • Station 2

  • Station 6

 

Final Check In: After Station 6, when you show Mrs. Roehm your completed assignment and she will give you a signature on your Assignment Tracker.

Google Classroom: Open the Q1P3: Introduction to Newton's 1st Law Labs. You will answer the questions in the document, but you will follow the directions from the website below.

Station 1: The Desk-Side Tug-of-War
 

1. Read the Big Idea for this lab:
 

Big Idea #1: An object’s motion only changes if the sum of all forces (net force) does not equal zero. (FM1 BP3)

2. Place a wooden block on a smooth black lab counter with a string tied on each side of the block.
3. Using the spring scales, hook them to the strings attached to the block and pull on each side of the block with the exact same amount of force. 

4. Discuss what the net force (the sum of all the forces) of the block would be in this scenario. 

5. Repeat step 2, but pull on one side of the block with double the force of the other side. Observe the motion of the block and identify the net force. 
6. Answer the lab questions.
7. Check in with Mrs. Roehm.


 

Station 2: The Moving Walkway POV

1. Read the Big Idea for this lab:
 

Big Idea #2: An object's motion can only be observed and measured relative to a chosen frame of reference. (FM1 BP6)
 

2. Put a wind-up car on a piece of parchment paper. 

3. Have one student observe the car from the side and observe how the car moves across the table while another student observes the car from the top and how it moves across the parchment paper. 

4. Pull the wind-up car back and let it go. Try to pull the parchment paper backward at the same speed that the car moves forward. 

5. Make sure each student in your group observes the car’s movement from the side view and the top view before answering the lab question. 

6. Answer the lab questions.

7. Check in with Mrs. Roehm.
 

**This lab can be tricky! The key is pulling the paper at the same speed as the car. Here is what you should be seeing…..Let Mrs. Roehm know if you need help!

Station 3: Hover-Disk Glide

1. Read the Big Idea for this lab:

Big Idea #3: Balanced forces result in no change in motion

(an object stays still or moves at a constant speed in the

same direction). (FM1 BP4)

2. Take the hover disk into the hallway and put it on the floor.

3. Turn on the hover disk and give the disk a very light kick. 

4. Observe the motion of the disk.

5. Repeat this but have another student put their foot in the disk’s path of movement. 

6. Repeat one more time but have another student lightly kick the disk in the opposite direction of its movement. 

7. Answer the lab questions.

8. Check in with Mrs. Roehm.

Marble Pinball Referees

1. Read the Big Idea for this lab:

Big Idea #4: Unbalanced forces cause an object to speed, slow, or change direction. (FM1 BP5)

 

2. Make sure to keep track of your marble during this lab!

3. Roll a marble down the ramp. 

4. Create different forces on the marble as it rolls using the straw by doing each of the following:

Round 1: Using a straw, blow on the marble in the same direction as it rolls down the ramp (from behind).

Round 2: Using a straw, blow directly onto the front of the marble as it rolls toward you down the ramp (from in front).

Round 3: Using a straw, blow from the side of the marble as it rolls down the ramp (from the side).

5. Identify how each of these changes the motion of the marble.

6. Answer the lab questions.

7. Check in with Mrs. Roehm.

After completing all of the labs, Mrs. Roehm will give you a signature on your Assignment Tracker page.

Q1P4: Newty's Lab Stations

Google Classroom: Open the Q1P4: Newty's 1st Law Labs. You will answer the questions in the document, but you will follow the directions from the website below.


Check Points: Check in with Mrs. Roehm after every station. 


Station 1: Superhero Send Off

 

1. Read the claim given to you on your lab document before you do the lab so that

you know what evidence to gather from this station. 

2. Build a tower using the boards at the end of the ramp behind the cement block.

3. Set the superhero figurine on top of the tower you built.

4. Place the egg with the smaller mass label on top of the car/truck and put this at

the top of the ramp.

5. Let the car/truck go down the ramp and hit the cement block.

6. When it hits the cement block, the egg will fly forward.

7. Repeat steps 2-6 using the egg with the larger mass label on top of the car/truck.

8. Experiment with how you can get the egg to knock the superhero figurine

off the tower.

6. Answer the lab questions.

Station 2: The Notecard and Penny

 

1. Read the claim given to you on your lab document before you do the lab so that you know what evidence to gather from this station

2. Get a glass jar or beaker.

3. Get the notecard and the penny out of your kit.

4. Place the notecard on the cup.

5. Place the penny on the notecard.

6. Flick the notecard.

7. The penny should fall into the cup.

8. Watch this video if you are struggling to

understand the directions. 

9. Experiment with different amounts of pennies.

How many can you get to fall in the jar?

10. Answer the lab questions.

11. Check in with Mrs. Roehm.

 

Station 3: Bernoulli’s Squirt Gun

 

1. Read the claim given to you on your lab document before you do the lab so that you know what evidence to gather from this station.

2. It iss much easier to watch this video to understand how to complete the lab, but there is also a written summary of the steps below the video:

1. Cut the straw so you have two straight pieces.

2. Go into the courtyard to avoid creating a mess inside.

3. Put 1 small piece of straw straight down into a cup of water. 

4.. Use another piece of straw to blow a steady stream of air directly over the top opening of the straw that is in the water. 

5. Observe: Water should be shooting out of the straw!

6. Please throw away your straw when you are done and pour your cup of water out.

7. Answer the lab questions.

8. Check in with Mrs. Roehm.

Google Classroom: Open the Q1P5: Predicting Motion With Images. Follow the directions to complete the assignment in Google Classroom.

Q1P6: Reassess

From Your Folder/Binder: Get out your Forces and Motion Learning Target Page.

Reassess only on targets FM.1 (Newton's 1st Law), SEP1 (Testable Questions), and SEP7 (Qualitative Lab Evidence).


Show Mrs. Roehm your completed self assessment tell her which target is your biggest strength and which is your biggest challenge (FM1, SEP1, or SEP7). Mrs. Roehm will give you a signature on your Assignment Tracker.
