Learning Is a Journey

Quest 2: Weather Forecasting
Q2P1: Eggsellent Entry Lab Station
Procedure:
1. Put on a pair of goggles.
2. Ask Mrs. Roehm for a peeled, hard-boiled egg.
3. Place a candle in the top (the pointy end) of a hard boiled egg. Light the candle.
4. Have one student hold the 1000 mL flask upside down. (See the attached screen shot picture below)
5. Place the egg in the flask so that the candle is inside the flask. Move the egg into the opening of the flask. Don't push it too far. Simply move the egg until it forms a"seal" with the flask (so no air could enter or escape the flask).
6. Hold the egg in that position.
7. As the egg starts to move, let go of the egg (Don't let go of the flask!)
8. When you are finished, leave the egg in the flask. Mrs. Roehm will be the one to clean it up.

Q2P2: Bernoulli's Squirt Gun
Read the slide below to learn about Bernoulli's Principle:

Complete the Bernoulli's Squirt Gun Procedure:
1. Fill a dixie cup with water.
2. Cut a straw in half.
3. Go outside.
4. Place the non-bendy half of the straw in the cup. Hold it so that it doesn't touch the bottom of the cup.
5. Take the other half of the straw (with the bendy part) and place it at a 90 degree angle to the straw in the cup. If this straw is angled downward, it won't work. It must be angled at 90 degrees or slightly upward. (Slightly upward tends to work better)
6. Exhale with great force into the straw that is parallel to the table. You must exhale hard! If you are confused, click the link in the next step to watch how to do it.
7. Bernoulli's squirt gun is created! You could click this link to see what happens.
8. Throw away the straws and cup.
Virtual Students You could watch this video to see what happens.

Q2P3: Marshmallow Madness
This station utilizes a vacuum chamber. When it is turned on, the air is sucked out of the glass chamber and the air pressure is lowered (creating a vacuum).
Safety: The glass chamber is irreplaceable. I am counting on you to be very cautious! Hold it with 2 hands at all times. Never try to lift the glass chamber when the pump is turned on.
Procedure:
1. Ask Mrs. Roehm if you can have a marshmallow for the lab. Each group gets 1 white marshmallow to use. Draw a face on the white marshmallow with a sharpie. Give your marshmallow a name. And, no, you may not eat them.
2. Place the marshmallow in the vacuum chamber.
3. Turn on the chamber and after a while the marshmallow should start expanding. At the very second that the marshmallow stops expanding, turn off the chamber.
4. You can turn the chamber on and off again if you want to see it again.
Move onto the next post. No need to check in with Mrs. Roehm.
Q2P4: Lab Questions
Complete this Google Form about air pressure and the last 3 lab stations.

Q2P5: Clouds and Fronts Graphic Organizer
Get a piece of white printer paper.
Follow these directions to create a Clouds and Fronts Graphic Organizer.
Show Mrs. Roehm your completed paper when you are done.
Q2P6: Weather Forecasting
This assignment is in Google Classroom (Q2P6 Weather Forecasting).

The directions for how to complete this assignment is in the Weather Forecasting Website linked HERE.
It is VERY important that you follow each step in order and read carefully. The directions will tell you when to answer questions on the Weather Forecasting Document. ONLY answer questions on the Weather Forecasting Document when the directions tell you to. DO NOT just try to guess on the answers. Follow the directions step by step! If you don't follow step by step, you will not be able to answer the questions correctly. Ask Mrs. Roehm for help if you are stuck on what you should be looking at on any of the maps or if any of the links don't work.

For some students the elevation and temperature maps don't load in Section A. I have included them below if that happens to you.
